Times: Austrian spy ‘in the heart of German finances’[1]

 

"Berlin and Vienna are on the brink of an espionage row amid allegations that a suspect in modern Germany’s biggest corporate fraud scandal was working for an Austrian intelligence service.

Jan Marsalek, an Austrian, was chief operating officer at Wirecard, the technology company that was the darling of the German stock exchange but is now bankrupt and facing criminal inquiries.

Mr Marsalek, 40, vanished in June and is alleged to be hiding in Russia with Kremlin assistance. A response from the German government to Fabio De Masi, a left-wing MP, suggests that the attorney-general has evidence that Mr Marsalek was recruited by the BVT, an Austrian intelligence agency.
